What About The Mess?

Worries about anal penetration getting messy keep a lot of people from trying prostate play. Obviously, there are some good reasons to be a bit more careful than with other kinds of sex, but you also don’t need to let those fears hold you back.

Contrary to a lot of myths, the rectum (the last several inches of the digestive system) isn’t a “holding tank.” In general, there won’t be much there until you have that “gotta go to the bathroom” feeling. If your diet doesn’t have enough fiber or if you take a medication that affects your digestion, there might be a small amount of shit left behind, but it’s easy to take care of that with an enema.

Choosing an Enema

If you’re nervous about things getting messy, it’s really easy to rinse out with an enema. There are a few different options available, depending on your preferences.

One form of enema is a hose that can be attached to the bathtub faucet. Although it’s convenient, it might not work well for you if your bathtub water pressure or temperature changes when someone turns on the kitchen sink.

Another option is a reusable rubber bag with a long tube that has a valve on it, which you can get at most drug stores. You fill the bag with warm water, hang it from the sink or door knob, insert the nozzle, release the valve, and let gravity do the work. It’s a great choice, especially if you want to clean things out a bit more deeply. However, for prostate play, it may not be necessary to do a very deep clean, in which case you simply don’t fill the bag completely, or don’t insert all of the water. That allows for a shallower rinse.

The third option is the squeeze bottle, which is available in both a reusable version at many sex toy stores and a disposable version at most drug stores. The disposable bottles usually contain a laxative solution, so just pour it out, rinse the bottle out, and fill. You can reuse it several times in one session, though don’t save it for another day. Bottle enemas are great for travel, since they pack flat.

How To Do An Enema

When it comes to preparing for anal penetration, you only need to rinse out the rectum, so you don’t need much water. One or two cups (250-500ml) is plenty. Be sure to use warm water by checking the temperature on your wrist, and only use water you would drink. If you don’t drink your tap water, don’t use it for an enema.

If you do enemas regularly, especially if you use a bag enema (which has a lot of water), it is possible to create an electrolyte imbalance in your body. You can avoid that by adding non-iodized salt to the water. A good ratio is 1/2 tsp of salt for 16 oz of water (1.25 ml of salt to 250 ml water), though it doesn’t need to be exact.

Lubricate the nozzle, get on your elbows and knees or on your left side, and let the water flow inside you. If you’re using a hanging bag enema, don’t insert an entire bagful in one go since that’s probably more than you  need. If you’re using a squeeze bottle, you can either insert one bottle’s contents and then release it, or you can insert, hold the water inside, and refill the bottle and repeat once or twice before releasing it all at once.

Hold the water inside for 15-30 seconds, then sit on the toilet and release it. You may want to repeat a second or third time, until the water runs clear, but don’t do any more than that.

Some Additional Tips

Since the rectum has little folds, some water can get trapped in there. Try doing a few gentle bends or twists while sitting on the toilet to help trapped water make its way out. It’s also a good idea to do the enema a couple of hours in advance and stay near a bathroom. You might find that the last little bit of water wants to come out later.

Whether you use an enema or not, there are some other steps you can take to avoid any potential mess. Put a dark towel down on the bed to protect your sheets. When you’re done, simply fold it up and toss it in the washing machine! And we’re big fans of gloves, both for protecting the receiver from edges on fingernails and for easy cleanup- just take the glove off inside out and toss it in the trash.

As you can see, it’s really easy to take care of any concerns you have about “the mess” so you and your partner can relax and enjoy the ride! Looking for more tips to make prostate play fun? Get your own copy of The Ultimate Guide to Prostate Pleasure and you’ll have all the info you need!
