What Is The Prostate?

What The Prostate Does

The prostate gland is an important part of the male sexual and reproductive anatomy. Together, the prostate and seminal vesicles (which extend out of the back of the prostate like a pair of wings) produce most of the fluid that makes up semen. In terms of volume, sperm make up a very small portion of semen. That’s why men who have had vasectomies don’t notice much change in the amount they ejaculate.

The prostate, like the penis, surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body). It is located just below the bladder, and above and slightly behind the deep end of the penis, which extends further into the body than most people realize.

During arousal, the prostate fills with fluid and becomes larger. The prostate may increase and decrease in size over the course of a sexual experience, just as the penis might get firmer and softer. At the start of ejaculation, the prostate and seminal vesicles squeeze their fluids into the urethra, shortly followed by sperm that have been carried up from the testicles by the vas deferens. Meanwhile, the muscles of the pelvis contract rhythmically, expelling the semen out through the tip of the urethra.

How Prostate Stimulation Feels

Even without direct stimulation, some men are able to feel their prostate swelling up when they get aroused. They sometimes describe it as feeling full, heavy, or swollen. And some guys can feel when the prostate begins to squeeze the fluids out as a fluttering or popping sensation. Being able to notice these rather subtle sensations may be easier for men who have experience with prostate pleasure, since they are more familiar with how the prostate feels.

Since the prostate gets larger with arousal, it’s often easier to find and prostate massage usually feels better when the receiver is turned on. There are a lot of techniques that men enjoy, from massage to vibrators to toys designed specifically for the prostate. Some guys say that it took them some practice to really feel good while others say that their first times were amazing. Whether you do it solo or with a partner, adding prostate pleasure to your sexual repertoire is a great way to discover new ways to enjoy your body.

A lot of men describe prostate orgasm as less focused than penis-oriented orgasms. They say that it feels more expansive or full-bodied and sometimes more powerful. With practice, some men are able to have multiple orgasms without ejaculating, allowing them to ride waves of pleasure instead of just one.
